Salomon XT-6 GTX
Looking for outdoor sneakers that can handle muddy trails and rainy mornings in the city? The XT-6 GTX from French brand Salomon combines a trail heritage with a sleek low profile, making it suitable for both outdoor gear and everyday outfits in a grey colorway. The GORE-TEX membrane is waterproof, so neither rain nor puddles will soak your feet. You can wear them all day on a mountain hike and still look good walking into a café.
The upper blends synthetic materials with textiles, keeping it lightweight and form-fitting. The quick-lacing system tightens in one pull, ensuring a secure fit without constant re-lacing. The midsole features Agile Chassis System (ACS) technology that stabilizes your foot on uneven terrain, while the OrthoLite® insole cushions every step. The Contagrip outsole grips wet rocks, roots, and gravel where regular sneakers slip. In the city, pair them with cargo pants and a windbreaker; on the mountains, your ankles and back will thank you. Salomon originated in the French Alps and continues to develop footwear for trail running and mountain movement. The XT-6 was originally designed for demanding ultratrail races, but you’ll now see it in the city as well.
Salomon XT-6
Silhouette Designed for Ultramarathon Runners, Loved by Parisians - Salomon XT-6
The shoe that François D'haene wore during his 100-mile run now strolls the boulevards of Paris on the feet of people who may have never seen a mountain trail. Salomon XT-6 was created as a pure performance tool for the toughest ultramarathon runners in the world, but over the course of a decade, it has become one of the defining silhouettes of fashion streetwear. This transformation from technical gear to fashion icon is one of the most intriguing stories in recent years in athletic footwear. Yet, the XT-6 still retains the complete technical foundation that first took it to the mountains.
History: Designed for Kilian Jornet and François D'haene
The model debuted in 2013, designed by the Salomon S/LAB team under the guidance of designer Benjamin Grenet specifically for elite ultramarathon runners like Kilian Jornet and François D'haene. The target audience was runners tackling distances around 50 miles (80 km) at a time – D'haene himself referred to the shoe as a good compromise between stability, protection, and performance in ultra-trail races, and he wore it on long walks under 100 miles.
Around 2020-2021, young Parisians began wearing old trail XT-6s passed down from their fathers as a fashion piece – a cultural shift that definitively transformed the silhouette from specialized gear to a fashion statement. Today, the XT-6 lives a double life: as a reliable tool for trail runners and as one of the most sought-after sneakers on the street.
Technology: agileCHASSIS, endoFit, and Mud Contagrip
What makes the XT-6 stable on technical terrain even after hours of running are these elements:
- agileCHASSIS (ACS): A stabilizing structure that works with the EnergyCell midsole, providing cushioning and support even after dozens of kilometers on uneven terrain.
- endoFit™: An internal sleeve that hugs the foot precisely and keeps it in place even during rapid descents.
- sensiFIT™: A construction that runs from the midsole to the laces, wrapping around the foot for a snug, "custom" fit.
- Mud Contagrip® outsole: Deep, sharp lugs (around 5.5 mm) made from a sticky rubber compound, optimized for loose, soft, and uneven surfaces.
Specifications
Weighing around 365 grams, the shoe's robust mountain designation is evident. The stack height of 22 mm at the forefoot and 32 mm at the heel keeps the foot relatively close to the ground, while the generous 10 mm drop makes for a forgiving ride even when fatigue sets in during the later stages of a run.
Who the Model is For
The XT-6 is both a fashion and performance silhouette – ideal for you if you run long trail distances and ultramarathons and appreciate stability on technical terrain, but it also works as a standout, technically-backed sneaker for everyday urban wear.
